Had a dream that Bob B (our new barn cat) came into the house together with another strange cat and that they made a movie out of Fred Pohl's strange and terrifying book 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑒 𝑂𝑓 𝑃𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑛𝑠

I read an entertaining mystery yesterday: Margery Allingham's _The Crime at Black Dudley_, published in 1929. It has a huge bleak manor house full of secret passages, young romance, an ancient dagger, a silly quippy master criminal/hero, and scary villains. It was a perfect comfort read.

Wikipedia tells me that it's the first of many stories about the character Albert Campion, who comes off as a fun spoof of Peter Wimsey. I'm sure I'll read more of these.

I am so happy with this book. It offers blueprints for making several of the most popular styles of top-down sweaters, including raglan, set-in sleeve, saddle shoulder, and round yoke. You can design your sweater any way you want, any yarn, any gauge, any stitch pattern. The saddle shoulder I made with it is the best fitting one I've ever made. Now I'm making a second one. #knitting #handmade #fiberarts #books annbuddknits.com/books/knitter

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 258.

Jacqueline Harpman's bleak novella, I Who Have Never Known Men (1997/2019) concerns a group of women imprisoned (possibly off world) who due to unforeseen circumstances escape into the wilderness that surrounds the bunker where they were imprisoned; the narrative is in the form of a memoir by the youngest of the group. Darkly dystopian, and both minimalist & without hop it is a compelling if uncomfortable read.

I'm trying to decide who to read next. I've got a Joshua Whitehead novel for some Indigiqueer representation. I've also recently acquired some Andrea Gibson poetry, Charlie Jane Anders new book, and an older Alice Hoffman novel.

Choices, choices. Whatcha reading these days? And are you having any concentration issues?

In these trying times of scary climate change, as autocracy threatens to end democracy, Making Global Sense by Judah Freed revives the ideas and ideals of Thomas Paine and the Enlightenment to champion 21st century freedom and enlightenment. The book shows how we got to where we are, and what we can do from here. "A must-read."

Just finished listening to the latest Alex Benedict novel, Village in the Sky by Jack McDevitt. I enjoyed it, but I think it is probably the weakest entry in the series. Still, I'm looking forward to more in the series.

Started in on The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso. Only on the first chapter, but I'm loving the tone so far. I think I'm going to like this one.
